Reasons for controlling rats and mice
Rats and mice should be controlled for three main reasons.
Firstly, they spread disease which may effect man and other animals. Some of these like Weil’s (pronounced “viles”) disease (leptospiral jaundice) can be fatal to man. This disease had been found only in rats but a Scottish Medical Officer isolated the disease in mice in the mid 1980’s. It is a known fact that mice have no control over their sphincter muscle so leave urine trails everywhere they go so don’t tolerate their presence. Diseases are spread by parasites, bites, urine, droppings and skin contact. Rat droppings can still carry disease nine months after they were excreted.
Secondly, they eat our food in fields, warehouses, factories, restaurants and homes. At the same time, they contaminate much more which then has to be thrown away.
Thirdly, they cause damage by gnawing at woodwork, water pipes, insulating materials, electrical insulators and they damage and foul many commodities from wallpaper to tablets of soap. Damage to property can be indirect, such as contamination of working surfaces and foodstuffs. Gnawed electric cables can cause fires and electrical breakdowns. Burrowing sometimes causes subsidence in roads and pavements.
Rodent control, is therefore an important and useful job that helps everyone and as such is worth doing well.
